Ali Rıza Özcan

He was born in 1968 in Kozlu, Zonguldak. In 1988, he graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Traditional Turkish Handicrafts Department, Art Major of Illumination and Art Minor of Calligraphy. He took illumination classes from Tahsin Aykutalp at the faculty. In 1990, he completed his master's degree at Mimar Sinan University Institute of Social Sciences with his thesis titled "Illuminated pages of Classical period Holy Qurans" ("Klâsik devir Kur'ân-ı Kerîmleri'nin tezhibli sayfaları"). In the same university in 1996, he was entitled to receive a diploma of proficiency in art with his thesis titled "Turkish Nastaliq School" ("Türk Nesta'lîk Ekolü").

Between 1983-1998, he learnt ruqah, diwani, jali diwani and taliq scripts from Ali Alparslan, and between 1989-2002, he learnt thuluth-naskh scripts from Hüseyin Kutlu and received ijazah (authorisation). He has books on inscriptions, tombstones, calligraphy and illumination art. His articles have been published in books, newspapers and magazines. He participated in group exhibitions and won awards in national and international competitions.

In 1996, he became a Research Assistant at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Traditional Turkish Arts and in 2002 he became Assist. Prof.  He is currently working as a Dr. Faculty Member in the same department.
