Born in 1960 in Tavşanlı, Kütahya, Ali Toy graduated from Tavşanlı Tunçbilek High School and then finished İstanbul Technical University Faculty of Architecture in 1988. In 1992, he completed his master's degree in Surveying-Restoration at Yıldız University. He received training in taliq, diwani and ruq'ah writing types from Prof. Ali Alparslan.

Toy has participated in many exhibitions both at home and abroad, has opened 30 solo exhibitions to date and has been awarded six prizes in international competitions organised by IRCICA. Known for his taliq, diwani and modern calligraphy works, Toy has developed a unique style by using basic geometric lines in his modern calligraphy works.

Ali Toy, who continues his classical and modern calligraphy studies in Istanbul, is a lecturer at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University Faculty of Fine Arts. In 2017, he was honoured with the Presidential Culture and Art Grand Award.
