M. Efdaluddin Kılıç was born in Üsküdar in 1968. After completing Bağlarbaşı Primary School and Üsküdar Imam Hatip High School, he graduated from Marmara University Faculty of Theology in 1990. In 1993, he completed his master's degree at Marmara University Institute of Social Sciences with a thesis titled "Yaqut al-Musta'simi's Works in Istanbul Museums and Libraries" (“Yâkût Musta’sımî’nin İstanbul Müze ve Kütüphanelerindeki Eserleri”). Kılıç, who started the art of calligraphy with Hüsrev Subaşı in 1985, continued his studies with Calligrapher Hasan Çelebi and received his ijazah (authorisation) from Thuluth and Naskh branches in 1993. In 1994, he was awarded an honourable mention in the thuluth category in the international calligraphy competition organised by IRCICA.
Kılıç, who worked as a teacher at the Ministry of National Education between 1991-2013, is currently teaching as a lecturer at Marmara University Faculty of Theology, Department of History of Turkish Islamic Arts. Since 1998, he has taught Calligraphy and Ottoman Turkish in institutions such as Caferağa Madrasah of the Turkish Culture Service Foundation, Hezarfen Art and Mim Art Academy, and still continues his educational activities within IRCICA and Classical Turkish Arts Foundation.
The artist wrote the inscriptions on the Mecca Clock Tower and contributed to the Masjid El-Haram Expansion Project. He has participated in exhibitions in many countries such as Germany, USA, UAE, India, France, Russia and gave seminars and practical courses. He continues his works in the fields of antiquities restoration, paper and ink preparation, paper colouring with natural dyestuffs. At the same time, he conducts research on the Turkish bow and arrow and works to revive the tradition of archery (kemankeşlik). The artist continues to work and teach in his workshop in Istanbul.
